Suga Apple Swim - celebrating Barbados
Hello my lovelies! I'm back and kicking into second gear with my next post! This time around I'm happy to announce my feature for Suga Apple Swim, a well known and ever growing Bajan swimwear brand. I had the opportunity to meet the bubbly and determined spirit of Kimberley Angoy, the owner of the swimwear brand. An entrepreneur, wife, and mother of two, Kim is absolutely a force to be reckoned with. She has made her mark in the Barbadian market, and just recently has made footprints in the sand at Miami Swim Week, opening door of hope and opportunity to local designers who wish to make an international brand.
Most Barbadians know of Suga Apple Swim, but what better way to know about all that is happening with them than to ask? Interviewing Kim has taught me a lot about an ambitious and driven woman. As a woman with big dreams and even bigger goals, never settle for your first achieved checkpoint, but go above and beyond.
TCA: What inspired you to start your swimsuit line, and what influeenced the branding? (name, colours, prints, cuts)
Kim: My love for swimwear is what pushed me to start my own line. No dramatic story, just a love thing 😉 The branding stems from me as a designer and an individual if you look at my interior design and my swimwear the similarities are striking, mostly clean and simple lines, very straightforward and to the point. I love colour! It excites me! I'm cheeky gal and I love the buns out (hahahahahahaahha). I really design for myself, when you design with love everything else will follow.
TCA: Suga Apple swim has been the hype of Barbados' swimwear fashion for about 2 to 3 years now. What are your goals in the near future (next year and give years from now)
Kim: Yes! In October we will be 2 years old and the growth and response from the public has been nothing short of amazing. Just this year we managed to reach a wider market outside of the Caribbean and I just hope to keep the growth going.
TCA: Not only do you have a swimwear line, but you have been working on a fitness/sportswear line which has some amazing pieces and will be introduced later this year. Do you have any other big projects underway?
Kim: I honestly don't do the tease thing and talk about what is coming, when it's ready I like to drop it like boom! 😆
TCA: As a woman and entrepenuer, what is your advice to young women who have large dreams and ambition like yourself?
Kim: Be humble, kind and genuine! Make lists and goals and tick them as you go along. Nothing is wrong with starting small, in fact I encourage. Slow and steady wins the race!
TCA: What is your favorite piece from your line?
Kim: Don't do that to me!!!! Hahahahaha, it depends on the occasion and the function. If I haaaaaave to choose our wholepiece deep V swimmie allows for me to be sexy, but not too sexy to run around behind my boys at the beach!
TCA : As a mother and wife, do you find it difficult to balance work and family? What is your method of dividing time evenly amongst your many tasks per day? We all know mommies never sleep.
Kim: My family is my everything and without them I am nothing, they always come first! The balance is not easy, recently I have been able to get home by 5 and from then until bedtime is my boys' time. My hubby is ultra supportive and in close running with my dad for my biggest supporter but we have set days that are our date days and weekends more so Sundays are reserved for beach and play park with our children. I design during the day and in the wee hours of the morning when everyone is asleep, my creativity flows best when I'm alone :)
